Software Engineer, Privacy Engineering (Lawful Access)
We are seeking a Software Engineer, Privacy Engineering (Lawful Access) to help design and maintain secure, privacy-preserving systems that support the responsible handling of legally authorised information requests. You will work at the intersection of software engineering, privacy, security and regulatory compliance, helping to ensure that technical solutions meet legal obligations while protecting user rights and maintaining strong operational controls.
You will contribute throughout the engineering lifecycle, from gathering requirements and assessing technical options to implementation, testing, deployment and ongoing improvement. Responsibilities will include building reliable services and tooling for lawful access workflows, developing secure interfaces and audit mechanisms, automating operational processes, and improving the accuracy, resilience and scalability of existing systems. You will also help identify and address privacy and security risks, ensuring that access is appropriately limited, traceable and subject to robust governance.
The role involves close collaboration with privacy specialists, legal advisers, security professionals, compliance teams and engineers across the business. You will translate complex legal and policy requirements into clear technical designs, explain trade-offs to varied audiences, and contribute to standards, documentation and incident response procedures. You may also support reviews of new products and features to ensure lawful access considerations are addressed early in the development process.
We are looking for experience developing production-quality software in one or more modern programming languages, together with a sound understanding of distributed systems, APIs, databases and automated testing. Knowledge of privacy engineering, data protection principles, secure development practices, access controls, audit logging or regulatory technology would be valuable. Experience handling sensitive data and working in highly regulated or security-conscious environments is advantageous.
You should be comfortable working with ambiguity, communicating clearly and making thoughtful decisions where legal, technical and ethical considerations intersect. A methodical approach, strong attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality are essential. The successful candidate will be collaborative, curious and motivated by building trustworthy systems that balance lawful requirements with the protection of individuals.
