Control Red Team - Research Engineer/Research Scientist
We are seeking a Control Red Team Research Engineer/Research Scientist to investigate how advanced technical systems behave under challenging, adversarial, and unexpected conditions. In this role, you will design and execute red-team evaluations that identify weaknesses in system control, reliability, alignment, safety, and robustness. You will work across research and engineering disciplines to develop realistic threat models, construct rigorous test environments, and translate experimental findings into practical improvements.
Your responsibilities will include developing novel evaluation methodologies, automated testing tools, and experimental protocols; creating challenging scenarios and datasets; analysing system behaviour using quantitative and qualitative techniques; and documenting vulnerabilities, failure modes, and areas of uncertainty. You will collaborate with software engineers, researchers, security specialists, and policy stakeholders to prioritise risks and support the implementation of effective mitigations. The role may also involve publishing research, presenting findings to technical and non-technical audiences, reviewing relevant literature, and contributing to best practices for responsible development and deployment of advanced systems.
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, mathematics, cognitive science, cybersecurity, or a related field. Strong candidates will have experience with research or production software development, experimental design, data analysis, and at least one programming language such as Python, C++, or JavaScript. Familiarity with machine learning, distributed systems, software security, formal methods, human-computer interaction, or adversarial testing is desirable. You should be comfortable working with ambiguous problems, questioning assumptions, and communicating complex technical conclusions clearly. A methodical approach, intellectual curiosity, sound judgement, and a strong commitment to ethical research are essential. Experience independently taking projects from initial concept through implementation and evaluation would be an advantage.
