Control Red Team - Research Engineer/Research Scientist
We are seeking a Control Red Team Research Engineer or Research Scientist to investigate how advanced AI systems can be evaluated, monitored, and controlled under challenging or adversarial conditions. You will design and conduct research that probes model capabilities, identifies weaknesses in safeguards, and tests whether systems behave reliably when exposed to unexpected inputs, strategic pressure, or attempts to circumvent established controls. Your work will help inform practical approaches to robust deployment, oversight, and risk reduction.
Responsibilities will include developing red-team methodologies, constructing evaluation environments, and creating challenging test cases across areas such as deceptive behaviour, instruction following, tool use, autonomy, cybersecurity, and model oversight. You will analyse experimental results, develop metrics and reproducible benchmarks, and communicate findings through technical reports, presentations, and research publications where appropriate. The role will also involve collaborating with engineers and researchers to translate theoretical insights into testing frameworks, monitoring systems, and improved safety mechanisms. You may contribute to the design of automated agents and evaluation pipelines that can scale investigations across different models, tasks, and operating conditions.
Applicants should have a strong background in machine learning, computer science, artificial intelligence, security, cognitive science, or a related quantitative discipline. We welcome candidates with industry, academic, or independent research experience, including those who have worked on model evaluations, adversarial testing, interpretability, reinforcement learning, software engineering, or formal methods. You should be comfortable programming in Python and working with modern machine-learning tools, experimental data, and large codebases. Strong analytical and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently while engaging constructively with a multidisciplinary team. Experience identifying failure modes in complex systems, designing rigorous experiments, or researching AI control and alignment is advantageous, but demonstrated research ability and intellectual curiosity are equally valued.
