Misuse Red Team - Research Engineer/Research Scientist
We are seeking a Misuse Red Team Research Engineer/Research Scientist to investigate how advanced AI systems could be misused, deliberately or unintentionally, and to develop rigorous methods for identifying, measuring, and reducing associated risks. You will design and conduct adversarial evaluations across a range of capabilities and deployment contexts, examining how systems respond to challenging requests, ambiguous instructions, social engineering, prompt manipulation, and attempts to bypass safeguards. Your work will help improve the reliability, robustness, and responsible use of AI technologies.
Responsibilities include developing red-team methodologies, evaluation datasets, and automated testing tools; carrying out structured and exploratory assessments; analysing model behaviour and failure patterns; documenting findings clearly for technical and non-technical audiences; and working with engineering, research, policy, and product teams to translate discoveries into practical mitigations. You may also contribute to threat modelling, risk assessments, benchmark design, incident reviews, and research publications. The role involves staying current with developments in AI capabilities, security, misuse risks, and evaluation science, while maintaining a high standard of research integrity and careful handling of sensitive information.
Applicants should have experience in machine learning, computer science, cybersecurity, software engineering, or a related technical field, supported by an advanced degree or equivalent professional experience. We value strong programming skills, particularly in Python, experience with modern AI systems and evaluation techniques, and the ability to design reproducible experiments and interpret complex results. Knowledge of adversarial machine learning, application security, threat intelligence, human-computer interaction, or social science research is desirable. You should be curious, analytically rigorous, comfortable working with uncertainty, and able to communicate nuanced findings effectively. Experience collaborating across disciplines and a commitment to improving the safety and accountability of emerging technologies are highly valued.
