Network Security Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Network Security Engineer to help protect critical systems, infrastructure and data across a complex technology environment. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative security function where you will play a key role in strengthening network resilience, identifying emerging threats and supporting the secure delivery of business services.
In this role, you will design, implement and maintain secure network architectures, including firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, virtual private networks, secure gateways and network access controls. You will monitor network activity, investigate alerts and potential incidents, and work with wider technology teams to contain threats and restore services effectively. You will also contribute to vulnerability assessments, penetration testing activities and the prioritisation of remediation work.
Key responsibilities will include developing and reviewing firewall rules, access policies and security configurations; analysing logs and network traffic; supporting incident response and forensic investigations; and ensuring security controls remain effective through regular testing and continuous improvement. You will produce clear technical documentation, maintain accurate records and contribute to security standards, procedures and risk assessments. The role will also involve advising colleagues on secure network design and supporting audits and compliance requirements.
We are looking for practical experience in network security engineering, with a strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching and common network protocols. You should have hands-on experience with firewalls, IDS/IPS, VPN technologies, network monitoring and security information and event management tools. Familiarity with cloud networking, zero-trust principles, vulnerability management and scripting or automation would be advantageous.
Relevant professional certifications, such as CCNA, CCNP Security, CISSP, CISM or equivalent experience, are desirable. You will need strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to explain technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. A proactive approach, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities are essential. This role may require participation in an on-call rota and occasional out-of-hours support.
