Head Of Data Protection & DPO
We are seeking an experienced Head of Data Protection & Data Protection Officer (DPO) to lead the organisation’s data protection and privacy framework. This is a senior role with responsibility for ensuring compliance with applicable data protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018, while supporting a culture of responsible and transparent information management.
You will provide expert advice to senior leaders, managers and operational teams on privacy requirements, data handling practices and risk mitigation. Acting as the primary point of contact for data protection matters, you will oversee the delivery of privacy policies, procedures, guidance and training, ensuring these remain current and aligned with regulatory expectations and organisational priorities.
Key responsibilities will include maintaining the records of processing activities, advising on data protection impact assessments, reviewing contracts and data-sharing arrangements, and supporting the management of individual rights requests, personal data breaches and regulatory enquiries. You will establish effective monitoring and assurance programmes, conduct compliance reviews and provide clear reports and recommendations to senior stakeholders and relevant governance forums.
The successful candidate will have substantial experience in a senior data protection or privacy role, with detailed knowledge of UK and European data protection law and its practical application. A recognised professional qualification, such as CIPP/E, CIPM, Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection or equivalent, is desirable. You will be confident interpreting complex requirements, assessing risk and translating technical or legal concepts into clear, practical advice.
Strong communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills are essential, together with the ability to work independently and prioritise competing demands. Experience of information governance, third-party assurance, cyber security, records management or data ethics would be advantageous. You will demonstrate sound judgement, discretion and integrity when handling sensitive information, and be committed to continual improvement in privacy standards and organisational practice.
