Engineering Lead (Cryptography lab))
We are seeking an Engineering Lead to guide a specialist cryptography laboratory developing secure, high-assurance technologies. This is an opportunity to shape technical direction, lead a talented multidisciplinary team and help turn advanced research into robust, dependable products and services.
You will set engineering priorities, establish effective development practices and oversee the delivery of cryptographic systems from early investigation through to deployment. Working closely with researchers, software engineers, security specialists and external partners, you will translate complex requirements into clear technical plans and ensure solutions meet demanding standards for performance, reliability and security.
Key responsibilities will include leading, mentoring and developing engineers; reviewing architecture and code; managing technical risks and delivery dependencies; and promoting consistent approaches to testing, documentation, version control and secure development. You will also contribute to recruitment, workforce planning and the continued improvement of laboratory processes and engineering capability.
The successful candidate will have substantial experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex software or hardware-enabled systems. You will have a strong understanding of modern cryptography, such as public-key cryptography, symmetric encryption, digital signatures, key management or secure protocols, together with the ability to assess how cryptographic techniques should be implemented in real-world systems.
We are looking for someone who combines technical depth with clear communication and sound judgement. You should be comfortable working across disciplines, explaining difficult concepts to varied audiences and making pragmatic decisions in an environment where confidentiality and assurance are essential. Experience with secure coding, formal or applied security analysis, cloud platforms, embedded systems or regulated environments would be advantageous.
A degree or equivalent experience in computer science, mathematics, engineering, information security or a related discipline is desirable. The role may require eligibility for appropriate security clearance. In return, you will have the opportunity to influence meaningful technical work, develop a high-performing team and contribute to solutions that address significant security challenges.
