Engineering Lead (Cryptography lab))
We are seeking an Engineering Lead to guide a specialist cryptography laboratory developing secure, high-performance technologies for real-world applications. This is an opportunity to combine technical leadership with hands-on engineering, shaping innovative research into robust, maintainable and production-ready solutions.
You will lead a multidisciplinary team of software engineers, researchers and security specialists, setting priorities and supporting the delivery of complex projects from initial concept through to deployment. You will establish effective engineering practices, promote collaboration and ensure that technical decisions are aligned with security, performance, reliability and usability objectives.
Your responsibilities will include defining architecture, reviewing designs and code, managing technical risk, and helping the team resolve challenging engineering problems. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to understand requirements, communicate progress and translate cryptographic research into practical products and services. You will also contribute to recruitment, mentoring, performance development and the creation of a positive, inclusive engineering culture.
The successful candidate will have substantial experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex software or security-focused systems. You should have strong knowledge of modern software development, secure coding practices, testing methodologies and technical architecture. Practical experience with cryptography, applied security, privacy-enhancing technologies or related mathematical disciplines is highly desirable, along with familiarity with languages such as Rust, C++, Go or Python.
You will be an accomplished communicator who can explain complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. A pragmatic approach to problem-solving, a commitment to engineering quality and the ability to balance research exploration with delivery are essential. Experience working in a regulated, safety-critical or highly confidential environment would be advantageous.
This role offers the chance to influence the direction of a technically ambitious team while working on challenging problems at the forefront of cryptography and secure computing. Flexible working arrangements and opportunities for professional development are available.
