Engineering Lead (Cryptography lab))
We are seeking an Engineering Lead to guide a specialist cryptography laboratory developing secure, high-assurance technologies for real-world applications. This is a hands-on leadership role combining technical direction, team development and delivery accountability. You will work with experienced engineers, cryptographers, researchers and product stakeholders to turn complex ideas into robust, maintainable solutions.
You will lead the design, implementation and review of cryptographic software and supporting systems, ensuring that solutions meet demanding standards for security, reliability, performance and usability. Responsibilities will include setting engineering priorities, shaping technical strategy, overseeing architecture decisions, and establishing effective development, testing and release practices. You will also help identify and manage technical risks, ensure appropriate documentation, and promote secure-by-design principles throughout the development lifecycle.
The role will involve supporting a collaborative laboratory environment in which experimentation and rigorous engineering are equally valued. You will mentor engineers, encourage knowledge sharing and contribute to recruitment, development planning and performance discussions. You will work closely with security specialists and other technical teams to assess threats, investigate vulnerabilities, respond to issues and ensure that research outcomes can be translated into dependable production capabilities.
We are looking for a strong engineering leader with substantial experience delivering security-critical or technically complex software. You should have a deep understanding of modern cryptography, such as public-key systems, symmetric encryption, protocols, key management or applied cryptographic libraries. Experience with secure software development, code review, automated testing, threat modelling and formal or independent security assessment would be highly valuable.
You will be comfortable making sound technical decisions in an evolving environment and explaining complex concepts clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. Experience leading multidisciplinary teams, working across organisational boundaries and balancing exploratory research with delivery commitments is essential. A degree or equivalent experience in computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related discipline is desirable. This opportunity offers the chance to shape an ambitious technical team and contribute to work where engineering quality and security have a direct, lasting impact.
