Advanced Research Engineer – Cyber Security
An opportunity is available for an Advanced Research Engineer – Cyber Security to contribute to the development of innovative security technologies, methods and solutions. The role will focus on researching emerging cyber threats, assessing vulnerabilities and designing practical approaches to protect complex systems, networks and data. You will work across the full research lifecycle, from defining technical objectives and reviewing existing literature through to prototyping, testing, evaluation and communicating outcomes to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Key responsibilities will include investigating areas such as threat detection, secure systems, vulnerability analysis, intrusion prevention, cryptography, malware analysis, digital forensics, artificial intelligence and cyber-physical security. You will develop proof-of-concept implementations, conduct experiments using appropriate tools and environments, analyse results and translate findings into robust recommendations. The role will also involve producing high-quality technical reports, research papers, presentations and documentation, as well as contributing to intellectual property, standards or externally funded research activities where appropriate. Collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering and research teams will be essential, along with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver work to agreed timescales.
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent experience in cyber security, computer science, electronic engineering, mathematics or a related technical discipline. Demonstrable experience in security research, secure software development, systems engineering, network security or a comparable field is required. Strong programming skills in one or more relevant languages, such as Python, C, C++, Java or Rust, are expected, together with experience using Linux, virtualisation, security testing tools or data analysis techniques. You should be confident working independently, able to explain complex technical concepts clearly and committed to maintaining high standards of analytical rigour. A postgraduate qualification, published research, industry certifications or experience with formal security frameworks would be advantageous.
