Control Red Team - Research Engineer/Research Scientist

Reference: v65pgxtqpq15w7dshcog

We are seeking a Control Red Team Research Engineer or Research Scientist to investigate how advanced AI systems can be evaluated, challenged and kept reliably under human direction. You will design and conduct rigorous experiments that test model behaviour under adversarial, ambiguous and high-pressure conditions, with a particular focus on control, oversight, robustness and the risk of systems pursuing unintended objectives. Your work will help identify weaknesses in evaluation methods, monitoring approaches and operational safeguards, and translate findings into practical improvements.

Responsibilities will include developing threat models and red-team strategies; creating test environments, scenarios and benchmarks; designing automated and human-in-the-loop evaluations; analysing model outputs, tool use and behaviour across varied conditions; and documenting results in clear technical reports. You will collaborate with researchers and engineers to build instrumentation, interpret evidence and develop mitigations. The role may also involve investigating deceptive or strategically adaptive behaviour, testing the limits of supervision, reviewing relevant research, contributing to internal technical discussions and communicating findings to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. You will be expected to work independently while maintaining a careful, evidence-driven and safety-conscious approach.

Applicants should have a strong background in machine learning, computer science, security, software engineering, cognitive science or a related quantitative discipline. Experience conducting empirical research, building reliable evaluation tooling, analysing complex datasets or performing adversarial testing is highly desirable. We value strong programming ability, particularly in Python, and familiarity with modern AI systems, language models, reinforcement learning, interpretability, cyber security or safety research. You should be comfortable forming precise research questions, working with incomplete information, challenging assumptions and producing reproducible results. Clear written and verbal communication, sound judgement and a commitment to responsible development of advanced technology are essential. Candidates at either research engineer or research scientist level are encouraged to apply, with scope and seniority determined by experience and demonstrated impact.
