Data Protection Manager - AI
We are seeking an experienced Data Protection Manager – AI to lead the development and delivery of data protection, privacy and responsible AI practices across a complex, technology-driven environment. This role will provide expert advice on the lawful, ethical and secure use of personal data in artificial intelligence initiatives, including machine learning, generative AI, automated decision-making and data analytics. You will work closely with legal, information security, risk, compliance, product and engineering teams to ensure that privacy is embedded throughout the design, development, procurement and deployment of AI systems.
Key responsibilities will include advising on data protection impact assessments, legitimate interest assessments, international data transfers, data-sharing arrangements and records of processing. You will establish and maintain governance frameworks, policies, standards and controls for AI and personal data use, while monitoring regulatory developments and translating them into practical business guidance. The role will also support privacy-by-design reviews, supplier and technology assessments, audit activity, incident and breach response, data subject rights and the management of risks associated with profiling, bias, transparency, retention and explainability. You will help develop training and awareness programmes and provide clear reporting on compliance, emerging risks and remediation activity to senior stakeholders and relevant governance forums.
Applicants should have substantial experience in data protection, privacy, information governance or a closely related discipline, with a strong understanding of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and relevant international privacy requirements. Experience applying privacy principles to AI, emerging technologies, software products or large-scale data programmes is highly desirable. Professional qualifications such as CIPP/E, CIPM, practitioner certification or equivalent experience would be advantageous. You will need excellent analytical, communication and influencing skills, sound judgement, and the ability to explain complex regulatory and technical issues to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. A proactive, collaborative approach and the confidence to challenge constructively are essential.
