Group Data Protection Officer
We are seeking an experienced Group Data Protection Officer to lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of data protection and privacy practices across a complex, multi-site organisation. This is a senior role with responsibility for ensuring compliance with applicable data protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018, as well as relevant international requirements. You will act as an independent adviser to senior leadership, providing clear, practical guidance on privacy risks, regulatory obligations and business initiatives involving personal data.
Key responsibilities will include maintaining the group-wide data protection framework, policies and standards; overseeing data protection impact assessments, records of processing activities, legitimate interest assessments and international data transfers; and advising on data sharing, retention, direct marketing, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. You will manage responses to data subject rights requests, personal data breaches and regulatory enquiries, ensuring matters are investigated, documented and escalated appropriately. The role will also involve developing and delivering tailored training and awareness programmes, monitoring compliance through audits and assurance activity, and preparing reports and recommendations for governance committees and senior stakeholders. You will work closely with legal, information security, risk, procurement, HR and operational teams, as well as engaging with external advisers and supervisory authorities where required.
The successful candidate will have substantial experience in a senior data protection, privacy or compliance position, ideally within a large, regulated or geographically diverse environment. You will have a detailed understanding of UK and European data protection law, associated guidance and practical compliance requirements, together with the ability to interpret complex issues and translate them into proportionate, commercially aware solutions. A recognised data protection or privacy qualification, such as CIPP/E, CIPM or an equivalent professional accreditation, would be advantageous. Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills are essential, along with sound judgement, strong organisational ability and the confidence to challenge constructively. This role offers the opportunity to shape privacy governance at group level and promote a culture of responsible, transparent use of personal data.
